Spiny Lobster Season in the Florida Keys: A Tradition Worth Diving Into!
There’s something special about lobster season in the Florida Keys! Whether you’ve lived here for years or you're visiting for the first time, it's one of those traditions that brings excitement to our beautiful island community.
Every summer, boaters, divers, and lobster enthusiasts look forward to getting out on our crystal-clear waters in search of Florida's famous spiny lobster.
When Is Lobster Season in the Florida Keys?
Florida has two recreational lobster seasons:
-
Mini Season: A special two-day recreational season held on the last consecutive Wednesday and Thursday of July.
-
Regular Season: August 6 through March 31 each year.
Unlike Maine lobsters, Florida spiny lobsters don't have large claws. They're known for their long antennae, delicious tails, and the challenge of catching them!
What Makes Lobster Season So Special?
For many Florida Keys families, lobster season is more than just a recreational activity. It's a tradition passed down through generations.
Early mornings on the boat, snorkeling over beautiful reefs, spending time with family and friends, and hopefully bringing home a fresh lobster dinner are all part of the experience.
And even if you don't dive, there's something wonderful about enjoying fresh Florida lobster at one of our local restaurants.
Know Before You Go!
Before heading out, it's important to understand Florida's lobster harvesting regulations.
Recreational harvesters generally have a daily bag limit of six lobsters per person in Monroe County, and lobsters must meet the legal minimum size requirement.
Proper licenses and permits are required, and certain areas, including protected marine sanctuaries and designated no-take zones, prohibit lobster harvesting. Rules can vary by location, so always check the latest Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission regulations before heading out.
It's All Part of the Florida Keys Lifestyle!
One of the things I love most about living in the Florida Keys is that there's always something to enjoy outdoors. From fishing and diving to boating and watching a spectacular sunset, our islands offer a lifestyle that's hard to beat.
Lobster season is just another reminder of why so many people fall in love with the Keys and eventually decide to call this beautiful place home.
Whether you're searching for a waterfront home with easy boating access or simply dreaming about making the Florida Keys your home, I'd love to help you explore the possibilities.
After all, it's not just about buying a home. It's about finding the lifestyle you love!
